Lifestyle Medicine For Long-Term Change

We know there is a lot of confusion about a healthy diet and lifestyle. It is overwhelming to make sense from all the noise. We can help. You will get straight consultation based on evidence and clinical experience.  No hype here.

The Rooted Medicine Difference

Complete focus on Lifestyle and Preventive Medicine: This is what we do 100% of the time. We are not only dedicated to addressing the root causes of our most common diseases but promoting a healthy lifestyle to achieve a higher quality of life. My goal is to provide all patients with habits and skillsets that will assist in aging gracefully. We may not be able to turn back the hands of time but by avoiding the common pitfalls, we can remain strong and active later in life, with less disease and a healthier mind.

Evidence-based nutrition as medicine: Let’s talk about food. How did healthy eating get so misguided? It is critically important, scientifically rich, and yet quite simple in practice. Ask all of your questions. We pride ourselves in being able to show you the evidence on nutrition, how to understand it, and why it matters.

Quality time with a Physician: Our medical system is not set up to support lasting behavioral changes. True behavioral change takes time and time is too short and valuable to waste on questionable advice from unreputable sources. Implementing lifestyle changes may decrease certain medication requirements that can lead to low blood sugar and low blood pressure. Working closely with trained physicians while on these medications can prevent or avoid harm.

Modern comprehensive approach to your health: At Rooted Medicine, we use your medical history, physical exam, biomarkers, and body composition with predictive algorithms to establish where you are and where you’re headed relative to common diseases. It is an individualized approach and based on your own personal goals and medical needs.

Finally, You don’t have to go it alone: All patients have their own individual needs and obstacles that are getting in the way of good health. We aim not just to identify these obstacles but to provide solutions and skills you need to thrive. Whether its stocking your pantry, sharing recipes, combating cravings or reducing stress, we will tackle it together. Working together over time, we can identify unforeseen issues, troubleshoot new problems that arise and track your progress along the way. We are here not only for support and encouragement but also accountability. Success isn’t achieved through pure willpower but skillpower. Learn how you can set yourself up for success.

Basics matter.
Your lifestyle accounts for a lot!

Lifestyle affects your genes, alters your biochemistry and hormones, determines your microbiome, and so much more. Nearly everything you depend on from your body is influenced by the small decisions you make every day.

Our lifestyle habits are interconnected. Improving one area can lead to improvements in other areas of our lives. For example, incorporating exercise into your daily routine can improve sleep quality, stress levels and the quality of foods we choose to consume. Unfortunately, the reverse is also true. Therefore, it is important that we remain attentive and not neglect these vital elements of health and wellness.

Nutrition: Probably the most important driver of human health. Research has demonstrated eating a whole food plant-based diet may help prevent, treat, or reverse many of our leading causes of death, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. You’ll be pleased to know that it benefits us when it comes to everyday illnesses too, like the common cold. While we realize such a diet may be a difficult change for some, we believe that any steps toward a healthier eating pattern are worth taking.

Activity: Aim for regular consistent physical activity that can be achieved daily. Strenuous activity is great but remember “you can’t out run a poor diet.” Exercise has been shown to improve mental health, mood, stress, sleep, weight loss and more, plus it plays its own role in combating chronic diseases.

Stress: We need a healthy way to deal with the daily stress in our lives. Some stress can be prevented or avoided. Other times we need to find a healthy way of handling stressful events. Chronic stress can lead to excess weight, anxiety, depression and even immune dysfunction.

Sleep: Sleep is your superpower for your body and mind! The shorter your sleep, the shorter your life! Inadequate or poor-quality sleep is linked to decreased memory and learning abilities, poor coping behaviors and decision-making (like skipping the gym and choosing junk food). Furthermore, studies also find poor sleep is linked to worsening chronic pain, inflammation, weakened immune systems and potential fertility issues, like low testosterone.

“Ironically, the side effects of eating healthy is not having to take drugs.”

Meet Dr. Collard

I am humbled to start this practice in the footsteps of Lifestyle Medicine giants and those incredible patients who inspired me along the way. Our new office is in a little 1902 house on Tennyson St in the Berkeley neighborhood of Denver where my wife and I put our blood and sweat into the remodel. Looking back, it has been quite a journey since my start at The Ohio State University. After finishing my degree in microbiology (with a focus on infectious agents), I transferred my attention to cardiovascular and diabetes research. I graduated with honors from A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Mesa, AZ, and completed residency here in Denver at Saint Joseph Hospital. I am board certified in Internal Medicine and licensed in Colorado.

I am extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to dedicate my career to such a meaningful, necessary and impactful field of medicine. I am truly indebted to everyone who supported me throughout this journey. I wouldn’t be here without the love and support from my family, friends and mentors who guided me along the way. Finally, I would like to recognize my brilliant wife who has not only played essential role in founding Rooted Medicine but has been my biggest source of inspiration, encouragement and support throughout my life.
